Organization and funding
Development
work more than 30 years
Fida is a Finnish International development agency and one of the
biggest non-governmental development co-operation organizations in
Finland. Fida´s development co-operation activities started
in 1974 and nowadays it is carrying out about one hundred development
co-operation programs in almost 30 countries in four different
continents.
Partnership
with Finnish government
Within the partnership agreement with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
the Government of Finland finances 85% of the budget through its NGO
funding. Fida runs also about 30 second hand shops in different areas
in Finland for development co-operation fund raising. The headquarters
of Fida is located in Helsinki, the capital city of Finland.
General
approach
In line
with
official aims and principles
All Fida´s development co-operation functions and methods are
in harmony with the official principles governing the Finnish
development co-operation. Its general objectives are: reduction of
wide-spread poverty, prevention of global environmental problems and
promotion of social equality, democracy and human rights.
Focus
on
people and their capacity
Fida´s general strategy for development is to help people in
need all over the world by creating, with local partner organizations,
sustainable development and improving living conditions in a
comprehensive way. Sustainable results can be achieved by strengthening
the capacity of the local partners and empowering them to become
positive influence in their own communities.
Accordingly, Fida´s development projects are mainly based on
training and capacity building of the poor rural communities or
vulnerable sub-groups in cities. Special emphasis is put on
comprehensive welfare of children, women and youth.
Targeting
indigenous
development
Besides the community-based approach, equally important principles are
to abide by the laws of the recipient countries and respect their
cultures and traditions. Fida is working from the basis of motivation
to love one’s neighbor and not to make any discrimination
according to age, sex, religion or culture.
This means that the vision in Jordan is to support an indigenous
development in which globally accepted development principles and
visions, such as UN´s Millennium Goals, are applied to the
frames of national development policies and community level needs in
the country.
Development and safety through co-operation
Complex working environment in the Middle East means that the reforms
towards democracy, good governance and increasing life chances are also
one of the best guaranties towards safety in the region. This
integration of development and peace, which is a major starting point
in the Euro-Mediterranean cooperation and European neighbourhood policy
and in which Jordan is an active participant, is appreciated by Fida.
It wants to act as one grass root player helping to construct
infrastructure for peaceful cooperation and brighter future for
communities and groups facing social problems.
Why
Jordan? Is it not already quite developed a country?
According to many macro economic and human development indicators
Jordan has done well during recent years and its aspirations for
beneficial societal reforms are even much higher. But there is still
much work to be done before all poor and vulnerable segments of society
will reach better living conditions. This means that there is still
need for the partnership of international organisations empowering
local NGOs and communities. |
